X-O Manowar #3 Review

Things are whipping into high gear in X-O Manowar. Aric has finally joined up with the armor and has commenced with the kicking of alien ass. From start to finish, this is a comic book about a dude in a suit of mystical, high tech armor pounding aliens into a bloody pulps. How can that not be a good time?

Robert Venditti has been teasing us that past two issues, dragging the title character through the mud. He's been tortured, beaten, and enslaved. Things got worse and worse, page after page. Then, finally, last issue ended with Aric reaching the fabled X-O Manowar suit. This issue is what they call “payoff.” Aric is a ball of rage armed with missiles and a laser sword. You feel his anger and want his revenge because of those last two issues. It's boiling over and you are just as ready as he is for the sweet, sweet payback.

Cary Nord's art looks great, if not quite as polished, in this issue. His character work is fantastic. The action looks awesome, but not as big as it did in the first issue. It's not bad, but the backgrounds drop away more often and the line detail is missing at times. Still, Aric versus an alien in a giant mechsuit is crazy cool, and we finally get some brief laser sword action. The best panels though are the ones that show the anger and intensity in Aric's face. The very last page is one of those moments where you go, “This is not going to end well.” I'm ready for the next issue, Valiant.
